Job Description

Responsibilities: The Academy is a small undergraduate institution located on Cape Cod and a member of the Massachusetts state college system. The Academy educates, trains, and develops young people for maritime careers and marine-related careers at sea and ashore. The Academy is seeking to fill two (2) full-time, tenure-track positions in the Marine Transportation Department. These positions have anticipated start dates of September 2005. Position Number FY05-06; and Position Number FY05-07: Teaching professional maritime subjects which may include but are not limited to: Basic Safety Training, Dangerous Liquid Cargo, Radar, ARPA, Ship Construction, Container and Intermodal Cargo Operations, GMDSS, Tugs and Towing, Small Vessel Operations, Seamanship, Celestial Navigation, Piloting or any other courses or practical laboratories within the Marine Transportation Department's curriculum. This curriculum may be viewed on-line at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy website. Candidates must be able to prepare all course materials and examinations with minimum assistance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Active Chief Mate or Master's Unlimited Oceans License - At least one year's recent experience as Chief Mate or Master on vessel requiring Unlimited Oceans License - Experience in Towing Industry - USCG / STCW Towing endorsement 3rd Mate Unlimited, or higher - GMDSS/STCW Maintainer Qualified - Simulation Experience - Train the Trainer Certified - Maritime Security Experience - Computer and Simulation Expertise - Trouble shoot / Repair - USCG PIC Endorsement - Previous teaching experience in same or related field All teaching positions at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy require an understanding of the teaching and advising requirements in the college setting and demonstrated potential to fulfill the applicable evaluation criteria. All teaching positions at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy require computer literacy, excellent written and oral communication skills, and an understanding of and pride in the Academy's unique mission. Appointments will be made at the rank of Instructor or above, as Professional Maritime faculty members. Appointments will preferably be made at the rank of Assistant Professor. The qualifications required for appointment at the various ranks are described below. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT - Professional Maritime Faculty Requirements (Professional Maritime Faculty members wear a uniform and are required to participate in the annual sea term at least every other year.) - Appointments at the rank of Adjunct Instructor require an earned associate's degree and journeyman-level competence in a specialized field or the marine field. - Tenure-track appointments at the rank of Instructor require an earned bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, a Second License, and at least three years of full-time experience in teaching or in professional service in the maritime field (or a combination thereof). - Tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor require an earned master's degree in a relevant field - ABD highly preferred, a First License, and at least three years of full-time experience in teaching or in professional service in the maritime field (or a combination thereof). - Tenure-track appointments at higher ranks require, in addition, a Top License and significant teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Appointments are subject to Board of Trustees approval and state appropriation. All new faculty are subject to pre-employment drug screening and a detailed background investigation.
