AEP Ohio partners with the U.S. Department of Energy and SB Energy to invest $4.2 billion in advanced digital and energy infrastructure to support data center growth in Appalachian Ohio.
In a major development for the Appalachian region, AEP Ohio has announced plans to invest $4.2 billion in new electric infrastructure projects across Appalachian Ohio. The investments, made in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and SB Energy, aim to support the growing data center industry in the area and drive economic development.
According to the press release, the multi-billion-dollar initiative will focus on deploying advanced digital and energy infrastructure to meet the needs of data centers and other high-power industrial facilities. The project is expected to bring significant benefits to the region without raising customer rates.
'This landmark investment will position Appalachian Ohio as a premier destination for data centers and other energy-intensive industries,' said AEP Ohio President and CEO, Julie Sloat. 'By working closely with our partners at the Department of Energy and SB Energy, we're able to deliver critical infrastructure upgrades that will drive economic growth and job creation in the region.'
The announcement comes as data centers continue to proliferate across the United States, drawn to areas with reliable, affordable electricity and favorable business climates. Appalachian Ohio, with its abundance of renewable energy resources and pro-business policies, has emerged as an attractive location for these large-scale facilities.
'The Department of Energy is proud to support this transformative project that will unlock new economic opportunities in Appalachian Ohio,' said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. 'Investments in modern, resilient electric infrastructure are essential for attracting high-tech industries and ensuring the region's competitiveness in the 21st century economy.'
Construction on the various infrastructure projects is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted for 2028. The initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs during the construction phase and support ongoing operations at the new data centers.
This announcement represents a significant step forward for Appalachian Ohio's energy and economic future, positioning the region as a hub for data-driven industries and sustainable development.
