Bilbao Port Embraces E-Fuels with New Petronor Plant

By MGN EditorialFebruary 6, 2026 at 05:22 PM

The Port of Bilbao is set to become a hub for sustainable maritime fuels with the construction of a new e-fuels plant by Petronor, a subsidiary of Repsol.

The Port of Bilbao is poised to become a leader in the production of e-fuels for the maritime industry, with Petronor, a subsidiary of the Repsol energy group, expected to bring its new e-fuels plant online by early 2027. According to Hellenic Shipping News, Elixabete Etxanobe, the Head of the Bizkaia Provincial Council, recently visited the plant site along with other local authorities, including Ivan Jimenez, the President of the Port of Bilbao. The visit underscores the strategic importance of this project for the region, as the port looks to position itself as a hub for sustainable maritime fuel solutions. 'The Petronor e-fuels plant is a significant investment that will contribute to the decarbonization of the shipping industry,' said Etxanobe. 'By leveraging the port's infrastructure and strategic location, this facility will play a crucial role in the transition towards a more environmentally-friendly maritime sector.' The e-fuels plant is part of a broader effort by the Port of Bilbao to embrace sustainable technologies and reduce its environmental impact. As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to lower emissions, ports around the world are exploring innovative solutions to support the shift towards cleaner fuels and propulsion systems. 'This project aligns with the port's commitment to sustainability and its role as a catalyst for the energy transition in the region,' added Jimenez. 'We are excited to work with Petronor and support the development of this state-of-the-art facility, which will strengthen Bilbao's position as a leading maritime hub.' The Petronor e-fuels plant is expected to play a significant role in meeting the growing demand for alternative maritime fuels, as the industry works to comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations and reduce its carbon footprint.
