New Vietnamese airline Sun PhuQuoc Airways has placed an order for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets to support tourism and economic growth on Vietnam's largest island.
In a major boost for Boeing's widebody aircraft program, the planemaker has announced a new order from Vietnamese startup airline Sun PhuQuoc Airways. The carrier has placed an order for up to 40 787 Dreamliner jets, marking its first direct purchase of commercial aircraft.
According to the press release, the new luxury airline plans to use the fuel-efficient 787s to 'serve as the backbone of its fleet' and support the growing tourism industry on Vietnam's largest island of Phu Quoc. The deal includes a firm order for an initial 20 Dreamliners, with options for 20 more.
'This landmark agreement will enable Sun PhuQuoc Airways to dramatically expand air connectivity and economic opportunities for the island of Phu Quoc,' said Ihssane Mounir, Boeing's senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. 'The 787 Dreamliner's unmatched fuel efficiency and range flexibility make it the perfect choice to serve Vietnam's tourism hubs and connect the country to key international markets.'
The 787 order comes as Vietnam's aviation market continues to grow rapidly, with double-digit increases in passenger traffic in recent years. Phu Quoc in particular has emerged as a major leisure destination, with the island's airport handling over 8 million passengers in 2025 according to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
'This order marks a major milestone for Sun PhuQuoc Airways as we work to establish Phu Quoc as a world-class tourism hub,' said the airline's CEO, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao. 'The 787's advanced technology and operating economics will be a game-changer, allowing us to offer a superior passenger experience while supporting the island's economic development.'
The 787 Dreamliner has become a popular choice for airlines around the world seeking to open new long-haul routes and improve fuel efficiency. Over 1,600 Dreamliners have been ordered to date by more than 80 customers globally.
