Brazilian Airline Expands Direct Flights to Europe

By MGN EditorialMarch 14, 2026 at 12:06 PM

GOL Linhas Aéreas, Brazil's largest airline, announces new non-stop flights from Rio de Janeiro to Paris and Lisbon, boosting connectivity between South America and Europe.

In a move to strengthen air travel connections between Brazil and Europe, GOL Linhas Aéreas, the largest airline in Brazil, has announced the launch of new non-stop flights from Rio de Janeiro's RIOgaleão International Airport (GIG) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in France, and Lisbon Airport (LIS) in Portugal. According to the company's press release, the new routes will provide direct access between the economic and cultural hubs of Rio de Janeiro and the major European capitals of Paris and Lisbon. The flights are scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. 'This is an important milestone for GOL as we continue to expand our international network and offer more convenient travel options for our customers,' said Celso Ferrer, CEO of GOL Linhas Aéreas. 'Direct flights between Rio and Europe will boost tourism and business ties between the regions, supporting the recovery of the aviation and maritime industries in a post-pandemic world.' The new routes are expected to be popular with both leisure and business travelers. Rio de Janeiro is a major cruise ship destination, with the city's port handling over 1 million passenger movements annually pre-COVID. The direct flights will improve connectivity for cruise passengers embarking or disembarking in the city. They will also benefit the broader maritime industry, facilitating travel for seafarers, port workers, and maritime professionals between Brazil and Europe. Industry analysts view the expansion as a strategic move by GOL to capture a greater share of the lucrative Europe-South America travel market, which has historically been dominated by legacy carriers. The new flights will compete with existing routes operated by the likes of Air France, TAP Air Portugal, and Iberia. 'GOL's decision to launch these new routes demonstrates their ambition to become a leading player in the trans-Atlantic aviation market,' said Niels Borresen, senior aviation analyst at gCaptain. 'It will be interesting to see how the competitive landscape evolves as other airlines respond to this move.'
