UK-based wind-assisted propulsion specialist Anemoi Marine Technologies has secured design assessment certificates from leading classification society Bureau Veritas, according to Offshore Energy. The approval represents a key validation step for the company's wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) and signals growing institutional confidence in wind-assisted technologies as a viable pathway to maritime decarbonisation.
Bureau Veritas, one of the world's foremost ship classification and certification bodies, issues design assessment certificates following rigorous technical evaluation of a system's engineering integrity, safety standards, and compliance with applicable maritime regulations. Achieving such approval is widely regarded as a prerequisite for commercial deployment aboard ocean-going vessels.
Wind-assisted propulsion has gained considerable momentum across the shipping industry in recent years as operators and owners face mounting pressure to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) revised 2023 decarbonisation strategy, which targets net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050.
Anemoi Marine Technologies specialises in rotor sail technology — large, rotating cylindrical structures mounted on a vessel's deck that harness the Magnus effect to generate forward thrust from wind energy. When deployed effectively, such systems can deliver meaningful reductions in main engine load and, consequently, fuel consumption and emissions, with industry estimates typically citing fuel savings in the range of 5–30% depending on vessel type and trade route.
The Bureau Veritas certification positions Anemoi's technology for broader commercial uptake, providing shipowners and operators with the classification-backed assurance required to integrate the system into newbuild specifications or retrofit programmes. It also strengthens the company's standing as it competes in an increasingly active market alongside other wind propulsion providers.
The approval comes at a time when wind-assisted propulsion is transitioning from niche innovation to mainstream consideration, with several major shipping companies having already committed to fleet-wide WAPS installations. Regulatory tailwinds, including the IMO's Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) framework and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) now applicable to shipping, are further accelerating commercial interest in auxiliary wind power solutions.
