CBP Launches April Recruitment Drive for Port and Border Officers

By MGN Maritime JournalistApril 6, 2026 at 10:01 PM

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is recruiting thousands of officers and agents, including positions critical to port security and maritime cargo screening.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced a series of recruitment webinars throughout April to fill thousands of positions, including CBP Officer roles that directly oversee cargo and vessel operations at U.S. seaports. The recruitment drive targets three primary positions: Border Patrol Agent, CBP Officer, and Air Interdiction Agent. Webinars are scheduled for April 7, April 9, and April 14, with registration required for participation. For the maritime and logistics sectors, the CBP Officer positions carry particular significance. These officers conduct inspections at ports of entry nationwide, examining containerized cargo, breakbulk shipments, and vessel documentation. Adequate CBP staffing directly impacts container dwell times, port congestion, and supply chain velocity. "CBP is recruiting for thousands of mission-critical positions," the agency stated in its announcement. "Many roles are eligible for significant incentives." The recruitment announcement comes as U.S. ports continue managing high cargo volumes and complex security screening requirements. CBP Officers must balance the imperative to screen for contraband, narcotics, and security threats against the economic pressure to move cargo efficiently. Shortfalls in CBP staffing have historically contributed to extended processing delays and increased costs for importers and freight forwarders. CBP emphasized that positions offer "rapid promotion potential, a variety of geographic work locations, and competitive compensation and benefits." U.S. citizenship is required. Federal hiring regulations apply to all positions. The April webinars represent the agency's response to sustained demand for border security and port oversight personnel. U.S. ports processed approximately 2.4 billion metric tons of cargo in 2024 according to American Association of Port Authorities data, underscoring the operational scale and the staffing requirements to screen this volume. Interested candidates can register through CBP's official event links or access application materials, FAQs, and other resources through the same channels. Additional information is available through CBP's careers website, X (@CBPJobs), Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and LinkedIn. For maritime and supply chain professionals, CBP staffing levels remain a barometer of port efficiency. Trade associations and logistics providers monitor CBP hiring and attrition carefully, as officer shortages correlate with longer clearance times at gateway ports.
