CMA CGM announces plans to strengthen inland container flows on the Mediterranean–Rhône–Saône corridor with an electric and hybrid river barge project and terminal modernization.

French shipping group CMA CGM is making significant investments to improve its inland container transportation capabilities in France. According to Splash247, the company has announced plans for an electric and hybrid river barge project as well as a €40 million modernization of the Lyon Rhône terminal. The electric barge is part of CMA CGM's efforts to strengthen inland container flows on the important Mediterranean–Rhône–Saône corridor. The company said the new electric vessel is planned for deployment in the coming years, supporting its goal of reducing emissions and environmental impact. In addition to the electric barge, CMA CGM is investing €40 million to modernize the Lyon Rhône terminal. This terminal upgrade is aimed at improving efficiency and capacity for inland container movements between the Port of Fos and destinations along the Rhône River. 'This project is part of CMA CGM's strategy to develop multimodal logistics solutions and strengthen our presence in the Rhône-Saône corridor,' said Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM. 'It illustrates our commitment to providing our customers with innovative, sustainable and competitive logistics services.' The investments by CMA CGM align with broader industry trends towards decarbonization and improving the efficiency of inland supply chains. As a major global shipping line, CMA CGM's actions in this area are likely to influence other carriers and logistics providers operating in the region.
