Damaged LNG Tanker Drifts Toward Libyan Coast, Fuel Tanker Diverts from Cuba

By MGN EditorialMarch 20, 2026 at 08:44 PM

A damaged Russian LNG tanker drifts unmanned in the Mediterranean, risking an ecological disaster, while a fuel tanker bound for Cuba changes course to Trinidad and Tobago.

Two recent maritime incidents have raised concerns in the industry - a damaged LNG tanker drifting toward the Libyan coast, and a fuel tanker that has diverted from its original destination of Cuba. According to gCaptain, the fire-damaged Russian LNG tanker 'Arctic Metagaz' has been drifting unmanned in the Mediterranean for over two weeks, and is now just 4-6 days away from reaching the Libyan coast. 'This poses a major ecological disaster risk,' said an Italian official. The tanker suffered a fire in late January and has been adrift since, raising fears of a potential oil spill or other environmental catastrophe if it reaches land. In a separate incident, The Maritime Executive reports that a tanker carrying fuel originally bound for Cuba has changed its destination to Trinidad and Tobago. This is a significant blow for Cuba, which is facing a severe fuel shortage that has triggered widespread power blackouts on the island. The reasons for the tanker's change in course are not entirely clear, but the development will further exacerbate Cuba's energy crisis. These two stories highlight the ongoing challenges and risks faced by the maritime industry, from damaged vessels drifting dangerously close to coastlines to supply chain disruptions impacting energy security in certain regions. Industry stakeholders will be closely monitoring these situations as they continue to unfold.
