Classification society and independent assurance body DNV has awarded what is reported to be the world's first certification for a wave energy technology, according to Offshore Energy. The milestone represents a pivotal moment for the wave energy sector, which has long struggled to achieve the regulatory and commercial credibility needed to attract large-scale investment.
While full technical details of the certified technology were not disclosed in the initial report, the certification from DNV — one of the maritime and energy industry's most respected independent assurance bodies — carries considerable weight. DNV's involvement signals that the technology has met rigorous standards for safety, reliability, and performance, criteria that project developers, insurers, and financiers typically require before committing capital to emerging energy technologies.
Wave energy has historically lagged behind wind and solar in the renewable energy transition, despite the vast and largely untapped energy potential of the world's oceans. Separately, India-based Delectrik Systems has announced plans to deploy the country's first industrial-scale vanadium redox flow battery project, with a capacity of 100 MWh, in partnership with Bondada Engineering. While not directly a maritime project, large-scale energy storage solutions of this kind are increasingly relevant to port electrification initiatives and the broader decarbonisation of coastal and offshore energy infrastructure.
For the maritime industry, DNV's wave energy certification is particularly significant. Offshore installations, island communities, and remote coastal operations have long been identified as prime candidates for wave energy deployment, given their exposure to consistent ocean swell and the high cost of conventional fuel supply. A credible certification pathway could accelerate project pipelines in these segments.
Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether the certification catalyses further investment and whether other wave energy developers seek similar endorsements as the sector moves toward commercial viability.
