Eco Wave Power is moving forward with its 1 MW wave energy installation in Portugal after port authority APDL officially commenced rehabilitation works on the Barra do Douro breakwater, a critical prerequisite for the project.

Eco Wave Power Global is progressing its 1 MW wave energy project in Portugal following the official commencement of breakwater rehabilitation works by the Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo (APDL), the port authority overseeing the Barra do Douro facility near Porto.
According to a PR Newswire release, Eco Wave Power CEO Inna Braverman is scheduled to meet with APDL representatives and key Portuguese subcontractors in August 2026 to coordinate the breakwater completion timeline, assess installation readiness, and discuss a grid-connection extension for the project's first 1 MW phase.
The rehabilitation of the Barra do Douro breakwater is a foundational step for the project, as Eco Wave Power's technology involves attaching wave energy converters directly to existing coastal and port infrastructure — such as breakwaters, jetties, and piers — to harness the kinetic energy of ocean waves and convert it into grid-connected electricity. The approach is designed to reduce installation costs and environmental impact compared with offshore wave energy systems.
The commencement of civil works by APDL marks a significant milestone, signalling that the project is transitioning from planning and permitting phases into active site preparation. The upcoming August coordination meetings will be instrumental in aligning the construction schedule with Eco Wave Power's equipment installation readiness and ensuring the necessary grid-connection infrastructure is in place ahead of commissioning.
Portugal's Atlantic coastline provides strong wave energy resources, making it a strategically important market for wave power developers. The Barra do Douro project represents one of the more advanced commercial-scale wave energy deployments currently in progress in Europe, and its progress will be closely watched by the broader marine renewable energy sector.
Eco Wave Power, which is listed on Nasdaq, has previously operated a grid-connected wave energy array in Jaffa Port, Israel, and has secured additional project agreements in multiple countries. The Portugal installation is among the company's most significant projects to date in terms of capacity.
