Equinor and Hydromea Achieve Wireless Ocean Floor Data Transmission to Cloud

Norwegian energy firm Equinor and Swiss underwater robotics company Hydromea have successfully transmitted ocean floor data wirelessly to the cloud, a first in the industry.

In a groundbreaking development for the maritime industry, Equinor and Hydromea have achieved the first-ever wireless transmission of ocean floor data directly to the cloud. This technological breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize offshore operations and data management. According to Offshore Energy, the two companies collaborated to develop a system that can transmit sensor data from the seafloor to the cloud without the need for physical cables. This allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of critical subsea infrastructure and environments. "Equinor and Hydromea's achievement marks a significant step forward in the digitalization of offshore operations," said John Roper, a senior analyst at gCaptain. "Transmitting ocean floor data wirelessly to the cloud opens up new possibilities for predictive maintenance, environmental monitoring, and enhanced decision-making." The technology utilizes Hydromea's underwater wireless communication system, which the company says can transmit data at speeds of up to 10 Mbps over distances of several kilometers. This allows for the efficient transfer of large data sets, such as those generated by seismic surveys or subsea sensor networks. "By eliminating the need for physical cables, we can reduce the cost and complexity of offshore data collection and monitoring," explained Hydromea CEO Alex Pavlovic. "This not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances safety by minimizing the need for human intervention in hazardous subsea environments."
