Explora Journeys Accelerates Luxury Fleet Expansion with Triple Milestone

By MGN EditorialMarch 10, 2026 at 03:21 PM

Explora Journeys celebrates the float out of EXPLORA IV, the coin ceremony of EXPLORA V, and the steel cutting of EXPLORA VI as it works towards a six-ship ultra-luxury fleet by 2028.

In a significant maritime milestone, Explora Journeys, the luxury cruise line owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), celebrated a triple ceremony at Fincantieri's shipyard in Genoa, Italy. The event marked the float out of EXPLORA IV, the coin ceremony of EXPLORA V, and the steel cutting of EXPLORA VI - all key steps in the company's ambitious fleet expansion plan. By 2028, Explora Journeys aims to have a fleet of six ultra-luxury cruise ships, cementing its position in the high-end cruise market. 'This triple milestone is a testament to our commitment to delivering an unparalleled luxury cruise experience,' said Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys. 'As we accelerate towards our goal of a six-ship fleet, we are excited to introduce more discerning travelers to our unique blend of refined European heritage and modern innovation.' The float out of EXPLORA IV marks the vessel's transition from the dry dock to the water, a critical phase in the construction process. The coin ceremony for EXPLORA V is a longstanding maritime tradition, where a coin is placed under the ship's mast for good luck. And the steel cutting for EXPLORA VI signals the official start of the construction of the sixth ship in the fleet. 'Explora Journeys' rapid fleet growth underscores the strong demand for luxury cruise experiences, even as the industry continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic,' said Liam Platt, a senior analyst at gCaptain. 'By diversifying its offerings, the company is positioning itself to capture a larger share of this lucrative market segment.' The new Explora Journeys ships will feature cutting-edge sustainability technologies, including shore power connectivity and advanced wastewater treatment systems, in line with the company's commitment to environmental stewardship. With the addition of these vessels, Explora Journeys aims to redefine the luxury cruise experience and appeal to the growing number of affluent travelers seeking unique, immersive voyages.
