ExxonMobil Awards Weatherford Deepwater Completions Contract Offshore Nigeria
By MGN Editorial•May 22, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Weatherford International has secured a deepwater integrated completions assignment from ExxonMobil's Nigerian affiliate, underscoring continued investment in West Africa's offshore energy sector.
## ExxonMobil Awards Weatherford Deepwater Completions Contract Offshore Nigeria
U.S. oilfield services company Weatherford International has been contracted to carry out a deepwater integrated completions assignment by Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria Ltd. (EEPNL), an affiliate of ExxonMobil, according to Offshore Energy.
The contract places Weatherford at the centre of deepwater operations in Nigerian waters, a basin that remains one of the most strategically significant offshore hydrocarbon provinces in sub-Saharan Africa. Integrated completions work at deepwater depths demands a high degree of technical coordination, encompassing well completion design, downhole tools, and intervention services — areas where Weatherford has been actively expanding its capabilities.
### West Africa Deepwater Remains a Priority
Nigeria's deepwater sector has attracted sustained operator attention despite the broader energy transition narrative, with major international oil companies continuing to sanction and develop assets in the region. ExxonMobil, through its Nigerian affiliate EEPNL, has maintained a long-standing deepwater portfolio off the Niger Delta, and this latest contract award signals ongoing commitment to production optimisation and well delivery in the region.
For Weatherford, the assignment represents a meaningful contract win in a competitive oilfield services market. The company has been repositioning itself following a period of financial restructuring, and securing work with a supermajor affiliate in a technically demanding deepwater environment reinforces its operational credentials.
### Industry Context
The award comes at a time when deepwater activity across West Africa is gaining renewed momentum, supported by relatively stable oil prices and operators' focus on maximising recovery from existing licence areas. Nigeria remains a cornerstone of African offshore production, and deepwater blocks continue to attract both development drilling and completions activity.
Full contract terms, including duration and financial value, were not disclosed. Further details on the scope of work are expected to emerge as the project progresses.
