Historic First: Bioethanol Bunkering of Deep-Sea Containership Completed at Port of Santos

By MGN EditorialJuly 14, 2026 at 12:00 AM

CMA CGM, Copersucar, and Bunker One have completed the first bioethanol bunkering operation for a deep-sea containership in Brazil, marking a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization in South America.

## Brazil Makes Maritime Decarbonization History at Port of Santos CMA CGM, Brazilian sugar and ethanol trader Copersucar, and bunkering specialist Bunker One have jointly completed the first bioethanol bunkering operation for a deep-sea containership in Brazil, according to a PR Newswire announcement. The landmark operation took place at the Port of Santos, South America's largest port, and positions Brazil as an emerging leader in sustainable maritime fuels. The vessel supplied in the operation was the CMA CGM IRON, which received bioethanol in what the partners describe as a first-of-its-kind bunkering event for deep-sea shipping in the country. ### A Strategic Convergence of Industry and Sustainability The operation brings together three distinct but complementary players: CMA CGM, one of the world's largest container shipping lines with a well-documented commitment to alternative fuels; Copersucar, a major force in Brazil's world-leading sugarcane ethanol industry; and Bunker One, an international marine fuels supplier with growing expertise in alternative bunkering solutions. Brazil's position as the world's second-largest producer of ethanol — derived primarily from sugarcane — gives the country a natural competitive advantage in supplying bioethanol as a marine fuel. Unlike fossil-based fuels, sugarcane bioethanol offers a significantly lower lifecycle carbon footprint, making it an attractive option for shipowners seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) decarbonization targets. ### Industry Significance The successful bunkering demonstrates that bioethanol is not merely a theoretical alternative but a practically deployable fuel for deep-sea commercial shipping. For the broader maritime industry, the milestone signals that South American ports — and Brazil's Santos in particular — could become important hubs for green fuel supply chains as the sector transitions away from conventional heavy fuel oil. CMA CGM has been among the most active major carriers in trialling and adopting alternative fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biomethane. The addition of bioethanol to its operational portfolio further diversifies the company's decarbonization strategy. The initiative also underscores the growing role of commodity traders and fuel suppliers in enabling the energy transition, with Copersucar and Bunker One providing the supply chain infrastructure necessary to make such operations commercially viable. ### Looking Ahead As IMO 2030 and 2050 emissions targets draw closer, industry observers will be watching whether this pioneering bunkering operation at Santos catalyses broader adoption of bioethanol as a marine fuel across Latin American ports and beyond. The collaboration between a global carrier, a regional commodity giant, and an international bunker supplier may well serve as a replicable model for future green fuel partnerships worldwide.
