Global Energy Alliance Launches India Grid Modernization Accelerator

By MGN EditorialFebruary 18, 2026 at 09:31 PM

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet has launched a new initiative to accelerate India's grid modernization and power distribution reform, with up to $25 million in deployment funding.

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has announced the launch of the 'India Grids of the Future Accelerator' at the Mumbai Climate Week event. This new national platform aims to support India's grid modernization and power distribution reform efforts, with the potential to unlock up to $100 million in funding by 2030. According to the press release, the accelerator will be anchored by up to $25 million in deployment funding from GEAPP by 2028. It will be supported by key industry partners including the All India DISCOM Association (AIDA), the International Solar Alliance (ISA), and Champion Utilities. 'Modernizing India's power grids is critical to enabling the country's clean energy transition and ensuring reliable, affordable electricity access for all,' said Simon Harford, CEO of GEAPP. 'This new accelerator will help catalyze innovative solutions and unlock much-needed investment to drive grid transformation across India.' The accelerator will focus on four key areas: grid modernization, power distribution reform, renewable energy integration, and energy access. It will provide technical assistance, access to financing, and a platform for collaboration between utilities, technology providers, and other stakeholders. 'Reliable, resilient power grids are the backbone of a sustainable energy future,' said Upendra Tripathy, Director General of the International Solar Alliance. 'We're pleased to support this initiative and help accelerate India's grid modernization efforts.' This announcement comes as India continues to make significant investments in renewable energy and grid infrastructure to support its ambitious climate and electrification goals. Experts say modernizing the country's power distribution networks will be crucial to integrating high shares of solar, wind, and other clean energy sources. The 'India Grids of the Future Accelerator' represents an important step forward in mobilizing public-private partnerships and catalyzing investment to modernize India's power grid and advance its clean energy transition.
