## Golar LNG Presses Ahead with Fourth FLNG Unit
Golar LNG has confirmed a final investment decision (FID) on a fourth floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit, ordering another 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) MKII FLNG vessel from China's CIMC Raffles shipyard, according to Splash247. The unit is expected to be delivered by the end of 2029 at a total project cost of approximately $2.45 billion.
The move marks a significant expansion of Golar's FLNG fleet and underscores the Nasdaq-listed company's long-term strategic bet on floating liquefaction technology as a cost-effective and flexible solution for monetising offshore and stranded gas reserves. The MKII design builds on lessons learned from earlier units in Golar's fleet, offering improved efficiency and capacity at scale.
With global LNG demand continuing to grow — driven by energy security concerns in Europe and Asia, as well as the ongoing transition away from coal — FLNG assets have attracted increasing interest from producers and investors alike. Floating units offer a distinct advantage over land-based liquefaction terminals by enabling gas monetisation directly at the wellhead, reducing the need for costly pipeline infrastructure.
The $2.45 billion capital commitment places this project among the more significant single-asset investments in the LNG sector in recent years. Delivery by end-2029 positions the unit to capitalise on what many analysts expect to be a tightening LNG supply environment in the early 2030s.
Golar's decision to proceed with a fourth unit at CIMC Raffles — a yard with which the company has an established relationship — also reflects growing confidence in Chinese shipbuilding capacity for complex, high-specification LNG infrastructure.
