Hapag-Lloyd in Talks to Acquire ZIM Shipping

By MGN EditorialFebruary 16, 2026 at 03:23 PM

German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd confirms it is in advanced negotiations to acquire Israeli container line ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.

In a significant move in the container shipping industry, Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft has confirmed that it is in advanced negotiations regarding a potential acquisition of all shares in its Israeli counterpart, ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. According to an announcement from Hapag-Lloyd's management board, the two companies are currently engaged in these negotiations, though no final decision has been made. The potential acquisition would see Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's largest container lines, add ZIM's fleet and global operations to its portfolio. ZIM is Israel's largest container shipping company, operating a fleet of over 100 vessels and serving major trade routes worldwide. The company has seen a resurgence in recent years, returning to profitability after a period of financial difficulties. The move, if completed, would further consolidate the container shipping sector, which has seen a wave of mergers and acquisitions in recent years as lines seek to gain scale and efficiency. Hapag-Lloyd itself has been an active participant in this industry consolidation, having acquired Chilean carrier CSAV in 2014 and merged with United Arab Shipping Company in 2017. While details of the potential transaction have not been disclosed, the combination of Hapag-Lloyd and ZIM would create a formidable player in the global container shipping market, better positioned to compete with industry leaders such as Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM. The deal would also strengthen Hapag-Lloyd's presence in key trade lanes, particularly those serving the Middle East and Asia-Europe routes. Industry analysts will be closely watching the progress of these negotiations, as a successful acquisition could have significant implications for competition and market dynamics in the container shipping sector.
