Laredo Secures $58M Rail Grant to Boost Border Freight Velocity

By MGN EditorialMarch 3, 2026 at 05:05 PM

The border city of Laredo, Texas has secured a major $58 million rail grant to improve freight infrastructure and speed up cross-border trade.

In a significant boost for freight operations along the critical Texas-Mexico border, the city of Laredo has been awarded a $58 million grant to fund rail crossing separation projects. The grant, part of Texas' inaugural rail crossing separation program, will help Laredo - the busiest land port of entry in the United States - enhance freight velocity and efficiency. According to FreightWaves, the funding will go towards constructing overpasses and underpasses to separate rail and vehicle traffic at key crossing points. This is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety, and speed up the flow of goods between the U.S. and Mexico, Laredo's largest trading partner. 'This funding will allow us to make critical infrastructure improvements that will enhance the efficiency and reliability of our rail network,' said Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz. 'Separating rail and vehicle traffic at these crossing points is essential for maintaining Laredo's status as the premier logistics hub on the southern border.' The grant comes at a crucial time, as shippers and carriers brace for potential supply chain disruptions from ongoing labor contract negotiations at West Coast ports. With Laredo handling over $300 billion in annual trade, these infrastructure upgrades could provide a valuable alternative route for goods moving between the U.S. and Mexico.
