LG Energy Solution Locks In Multi-Year Canadian Lithium Supply to Bolster Battery Material Chain
By MGN Editorial•October 8, 2026 at 12:00 AM
LG Energy Solution has secured a four-year supply agreement for 240,000 dry metric tonnes of spodumene concentrate from Canadian producer Elevra, strengthening North American battery material supply chains for EV and energy storage applications.
## LG Energy Solution Secures Canadian Spodumene Supply in Long-Term Deal
LG Energy Solution has announced a multi-year supply agreement with Canadian mining firm Elevra for 240,000 dry metric tonnes of spodumene concentrate, according to a PR Newswire release. The deal, spanning four years, will draw material from an operational Canadian mine and is designed to reinforce the company's raw material flexibility across both electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) battery production.
Spodumene concentrate is a key lithium-bearing mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries, making it a critical upstream commodity for the rapidly expanding clean energy sector. By sourcing domestically within North America, LG Energy Solution aims to reduce exposure to geopolitically sensitive supply chains that have historically relied on Australian and South American sources.
### Strategic Significance for North American Supply Chains
The agreement reflects a broader industry trend toward regionalising critical mineral supply chains, particularly as North American policy frameworks — including the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act — incentivise domestic sourcing of battery materials. Local procurement of spodumene concentrate supports compliance with content requirements tied to EV tax credits and positions LG Energy Solution competitively within the North American market.
For the maritime and energy storage sectors, the deal carries particular relevance. Shore-side and vessel-based energy storage systems are increasingly reliant on lithium-ion technology, and supply chain stability for battery-grade lithium is a growing concern for shipowners, port operators, and offshore energy developers investing in electrification infrastructure.
### Growing ESS Demand Drives Procurement Strategy
LG Energy Solution cited growing North American ESS demand as a primary driver of the agreement. Energy storage systems are playing an expanding role in port electrification projects, cold-ironing infrastructure, and hybrid marine propulsion — sectors where reliable battery supply is essential for project delivery timelines.
Elevra's mine is described as operational, reducing development risk typically associated with early-stage mining agreements and offering greater certainty of supply over the contract period.
The deal underscores the intensifying competition among battery manufacturers to secure upstream mineral supply as demand for both EV and stationary storage applications accelerates through the decade.
