A.P. Moller-Maersk has announced a breakthrough deployment of wind-assisted propulsion technology, with rotor sail specialist Anemoi set to install a single rotor sail aboard an 8,700 TEU container vessel in the Danish shipping giant's fleet, according to Seatrade Maritime.
The project represents a significant milestone for wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) technology, which has to date seen wider adoption aboard bulk carriers and tankers than in the container shipping segment. Applying rotor sail technology to a vessel of this size and type signals growing confidence in the commercial and operational viability of wind propulsion across a broader range of ship classes.
Rotor sails — also known as Flettner rotors — harness the Magnus effect, spinning vertically mounted cylinders to generate aerodynamic lift that supplements conventional engine thrust.
