MARAD Launches Maritime Workforce Training Initiative

The U.S. Maritime Administration opens applications for its Centers of Excellence program to train the next generation of maritime workers.

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has launched a nationwide recruitment drive for its Centers of Excellence program, opening applications for institutions seeking to train the next generation of maritime workers. According to gCaptain, the initiative is part of the Biden administration's push to bolster U.S. shipbuilding capabilities. The Centers of Excellence program will provide funding and support to colleges, universities, and other training providers to develop curricula and facilities focused on in-demand maritime skills. "This is a critical step in ensuring we have the skilled workforce needed to support the growth of the U.S. maritime industry," said MARAD Administrator Ann Phillips. "By investing in maritime workforce development, we're laying the groundwork for a thriving, sustainable American fleet." The announcement comes as the U.S. shipbuilding industry faces labor shortages and an aging workforce. Industry groups have called for greater investment in maritime education and training to meet the demand for vessel construction, repair, and operations personnel. Eligible applicants for the Centers of Excellence program include public and private two- and four-year colleges, universities, and vocational/technical schools. The application period is open through June 30, 2023, with awards expected to be announced later this year.
