Mauritius Launches 'World-First' Offshore Wave Energy Project

By MGN EditorialMarch 12, 2026 at 01:24 PM

French wave energy developer Seaturns has launched a pre-commercial offshore wave energy project in Mauritius, touted as a global first.

In a significant milestone for the global renewable energy transition, French wave energy technology developer Seaturns has launched what it claims is the world's first pre-commercial offshore wave energy project in Mauritius. The project, located off the coast of Mauritius, aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of Seaturns' proprietary wave energy conversion technology at scale. According to the company, the project will 'pave the way for the large-scale deployment of offshore wave energy' and help establish Mauritius as a hub for marine renewable energy development in the Indian Ocean region. 'This is a major step forward for the wave energy sector, proving that our technology can be deployed at a pre-commercial scale to generate clean, reliable electricity from ocean waves,' said Seaturns CEO Jean-Luc Longuet. 'Mauritius provides an ideal test bed, with its favorable wave climate and strong government support for renewable energy.' The project is being supported by the Mauritian government, which has set ambitious targets to generate 60% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Mauritius currently relies heavily on imported fossil fuels for power generation, making the development of indigenous renewable resources a key national priority. 'This pioneering wave energy project aligns perfectly with Mauritius' renewable energy goals,' said Raj Meetarbhan, Minister of Energy and Public Utilities. 'We are excited to host this world-first initiative and look forward to the lessons learned that can accelerate the growth of the wave energy sector, both in Mauritius and globally.' According to gCaptain, the project represents a significant technological advancement for the wave energy industry, which has struggled to achieve commercial-scale deployments to date. If successful, it could pave the way for wider adoption of offshore wave energy as a clean, predictable source of renewable power generation.
