The United States Merchant Marine Academy has dedicated a new Memorial Pavilion at its Kings Point campus, paying lasting tribute to Merchant Marines who gave their lives in service to the nation.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) has unveiled a new Memorial Pavilion at its Kings Point, New York campus, honoring the sacrifices of Merchant Marines who died in service to the United States. The dedication ceremony, held in late May 2026, brought together academy officials, alumni, and representatives from consulting design firm H2M architects + engineers (H2M), which led the project in partnership with the USMMA and its Alumni Association & Foundation (AAF), according to a PR Newswire release. 'The Merchant Marine has long been considered the 'fourth arm of defense,' providing critical logistical support during wartime and sustaining global commerce in peacetime,' the academy noted in its announcement. The new pavilion serves as a permanent site of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving aboard American merchant vessels. The USMMA, located in Kings Point on Long Island's north shore, is one of five federal service academies in the United States and the only one dedicated to training officers for the maritime industry and armed forces. Graduates serve in the U.S. Merchant Marine, the military, and across the broader maritime and transportation sectors. The involvement of H2M architects + engineers — a firm with deep roots in the New York and New England region — underscores the collaborative effort between the academy's institutional leadership and its alumni community to ensure the memorial reflects the gravity and dignity of those it commemorates. The Memorial Pavilion adds to the academy's existing commemorative landscape and is expected to serve as a focal point during future remembrance ceremonies, including those tied to Memorial Day and the academy's annual traditions honoring service and sacrifice. The unveiling comes at a time of renewed national attention to the contributions of the U.S. Merchant Marine, whose wartime role — particularly during World War II, when Merchant Marine casualties ranked among the highest of any service branch per capita — has historically received less public recognition than that of the conventional armed forces. The AAF, which supports the academy through fundraising and alumni engagement, played a central role in bringing the project to fruition, reflecting the enduring commitment of USMMA graduates to preserving the legacy of those who served before them.
