Mexico Delivers Aid to Cuba Amid U.S. Fuel Crackdown
By MGN Editorial•February 13, 2026 at 03:24 AM
Two Mexican ships delivered 814 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba, defying U.S. pressure after Washington threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island nation.
In a move that challenges U.S. sanctions, Mexico has stepped up to provide critical aid to Cuba as the island nation faces a fuel supply crunch. According to gCaptain, two Mexican-flagged ships delivered 814 tons of food and other supplies to Havana Harbor on Thursday.
This comes after the U.S. threatened tariffs on countries that continue to ship oil to Cuba, a key ally of Mexico. Washington has tightened the screws on Cuba's economy in recent years, seeking to isolate the communist-run government. However, Mexico has resisted U.S. pressure, halting oil shipments in January but pledging to provide humanitarian assistance.
'Mexico's decision to send these aid ships demonstrates its commitment to supporting the Cuban people, even in the face of U.S. sanctions,' said industry analyst Maria Hernandez. 'It's a bold move that could further strain relations between Mexico and the United States over Cuba policy.'
The delivery of essential goods like food and medicine provides a lifeline for Cubans suffering from shortages exacerbated by the U.S. embargo. While the Biden administration has eased some restrictions, the broader sanctions regime remains in place and continues to impact the Cuban population.
This latest development underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Caribbean, as regional powers navigate the competing interests of the U.S. and Cuba. Maritime industry observers will be watching closely to see if Mexico's aid shipments continue or if Washington takes further action to prevent the flow of supplies to the island.
