Middle East Conflict Disrupts Global LPG Supply, Squeezing India

By MGN EditorialMarch 18, 2026 at 02:00 AM

Escalating armed conflict in the Middle East has led to the 'technical' closure of the Strait of Hormuz, creating a critical LPG supply gap for major importer India.

The escalated armed conflict in the Middle East has sent ripples across global energy markets, but few countries are as exposed as India. As one of the world's largest importers of LPG, the country now faces a critical supply gap, following the 'technical' closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While the details remain murky, industry sources indicate that the vital shipping chokepoint has been effectively blockaded, halting the flow of LPG and other energy commodities from major producers in the Persian Gulf. This has created immediate supply shortages for India, which relies on imports to meet over 60% of its domestic LPG demand. 'The situation is extremely concerning,' said Raj Malhotra, director of the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry. 'With Hormuz closed, we are scrambling to find alternative supply sources, but the logistics are extremely challenging. This could have severe consequences for households and industries across India that depend on LPG.' According to Hellenic Shipping News, the supply crunch is already being felt, with LPG prices in India spiking by over 35% in the past week. Shipping rates for LPG carriers have also surged, as the market grapples with the loss of a critical trade route. The disruption comes at a particularly inopportune time, as the summer demand season approaches in India. Industry analysts warn that the country may be forced to ration LPG supplies if the Hormuz blockade persists, potentially leading to social unrest and economic hardship. 'This crisis underscores the vulnerability of India's energy security and the urgent need to diversify supply sources and transportation routes,' said Malhotra. 'It's a wake-up call that the government cannot ignore.'
