Middle East Tensions Disrupt Shipping as CMA CGM Suspends Bookings

By MGN EditorialMarch 3, 2026 at 03:20 PM

Container line CMA CGM has suspended all cargo bookings to the Middle East as Iran attacks oil facilities and tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf, causing chaos for regional ports.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply this week, disrupting global shipping operations in the critical Persian Gulf region. According to FreightWaves, container line CMA CGM has suspended all cargo bookings to the Middle East in response to the latest attacks. Iran struck crude oil facilities and tanker traffic in the Gulf, prompting CMA CGM to take the drastic step of halting all bookings to the region until further notice. 'The situation in the Persian Gulf is extremely volatile and unpredictable,' a CMA CGM spokesperson told the Journal of Commerce. 'We have decided to suspend all cargo bookings to the Middle East in order to safeguard our crews and assets.' The attacks have created 'port chaos' in the region, the JOC reports, as carriers pause India-Middle East trade lanes. While reefer and time-sensitive cargoes are the immediate priority, many mainline services have been disrupted. An expert on the conflict in Yemen told the TPM26 conference that the leadership of the Tehran-backed Houthi militant group appears divided on how to respond to the latest US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Shipping lines are now bracing for potential retaliation that could further escalate the situation. 'Shipping companies are very concerned about the safety of their crews and vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,' said the gCaptain maritime news site. 'There are real fears that this conflict could spiral out of control and lead to a wider conflagration in the region.' The disruption comes at a challenging time for global supply chains, which are still recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Carriers and shippers will be hoping for a swift de-escalation to avoid further delays and capacity shortages.
