Mining Giants Rio Tinto and Glencore Abandon Merger Talks
By MGN Editorial•February 6, 2026 at 05:22 PM
Rio Tinto and Glencore have called off renewed discussions for a mega-merger, scrapping plans that could have reshaped the global mining sector.
In a surprise move, mining giants Rio Tinto and Glencore have abandoned plans for a major merger, the companies confirmed on Thursday.
The two firms had been in renewed talks about a potential tie-up that could have created the world's largest mining company, but those discussions have now ended without an agreement.
'Rio Tinto and Glencore have mutually agreed to cease discussions regarding a possible combination of the two companies,' the firms said in a joint statement. 'The companies have concluded that they will not proceed with a combination at this time.'
The proposed merger would have brought together two of the world's largest diversified mining companies, combining Rio Tinto's strengths in iron ore, aluminum and copper with Glencore's portfolio of coal, zinc and other commodities.
However, sources familiar with the matter told *Splash247* that the companies were unable to reach consensus on key terms, including the ownership structure and leadership of the combined entity.
'While the strategic rationale for a combination was clear, the companies were unable to agree commercially acceptable terms,' the statement added.
The collapse of the merger talks represents a missed opportunity to create a mining behemoth that could have better weathered the current market volatility, according to industry analysts.
'This would have been a transformative deal for the global mining sector,' Georgi Slavov, head of research at brokerage Marex, told *The Maritime Executive*. 'But the complexity of merging two such large and diversified companies appears to have been too great to overcome.'
The news comes as the mining industry faces a range of challenges, from softening commodity prices to increasing pressure to decarbonize operations. Rio Tinto and Glencore will now have to chart their own paths forward as they navigate these headwinds.
