## Japan Reaches Methanol Engine Milestone
Mitsui E&S has completed factory acceptance testing (FAT) of Japan's first WinGD methanol dual-fuel large marine engine, according to Splash247, marking a landmark achievement for the country's marine engine manufacturing sector.
The engine — designated the DU-WinGD 6X82DF-M-1.0 LP-SCR — was manufactured by group company Mitsui E&S DU at its Tamano Works facility in Japan. The successful FAT also represents the first large WinGD engine of any type to be produced at the Tamano Works, underlining the facility's growing role in next-generation marine propulsion.
### Significance for Alternative Fuel Adoption
The milestone carries considerable weight for the broader maritime industry's decarbonisation agenda. Methanol is increasingly viewed as a viable near-term alternative fuel, offering lower sulphur oxide (SOx) and particulate emissions compared to conventional marine fuels, as well as a pathway to carbon-neutral operations when produced from renewable sources.
WinGD's X-DF-M series engines have attracted growing interest from shipowners seeking dual-fuel flexibility, allowing vessels to operate on both methanol and conventional fuel oil. The LP-SCR (Low-Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction) configuration integrated into this engine further supports compliance with tightening NOx emissions regulations under MARPOL Annex VI.
### Domestic Manufacturing Capacity
The production of this engine at Tamano Works is also strategically significant for Japan's domestic shipbuilding and marine engineering supply chain. Establishing in-country manufacturing capability for methanol-capable engines reduces reliance on overseas production and positions Japanese yards and engine builders to meet anticipated demand as methanol-fuelled newbuilding orders continue to rise globally.
Mitsui E&S has been an established licensee of WinGD two-stroke engines for the Japanese market, and this latest development signals the company's commitment to expanding its alternative fuel engine portfolio in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) decarbonisation targets.
The successful factory acceptance test paves the way for the engine's delivery and installation aboard its designated vessel, with the achievement expected to encourage further methanol dual-fuel engine orders from Japanese and international shipowners alike.
