MOL Enters European Offshore Wind Vessel Market

By MGN EditorialMarch 9, 2026 at 11:55 AM

Japan's largest shipping company MOL partners with Schoeller Holdings to jointly own two offshore wind service vessels and acquires stake in German operator Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt.

In a move to expand its foothold in the growing European offshore wind sector, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Japan's largest shipping company, has announced a joint venture with Cyprus-based Schoeller Holdings to own and operate two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs). According to the announcement, MOL will jointly own the two CSOVs with Schoeller Holdings, a leading player in the offshore wind vessel market. Additionally, MOL has acquired a stake in the Hamburg-based company Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt, which will be responsible for operating the vessels. 'This investment represents MOL's strategic move to establish a stronger presence in the fast-growing European offshore wind market,' said Takeshi Hashimoto, President of MOL. 'By partnering with experienced players like Schoeller Holdings and Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt, we aim to leverage our expertise in maritime operations to support the expansion of offshore wind energy in the region.' The CSOVs, which are specialized vessels used to transport, accommodate and support technicians during the installation and maintenance of offshore wind farms, will be built to the latest environmental standards and equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance operational efficiency and crew comfort. 'This joint venture aligns with MOL's broader sustainability goals, as we continue to invest in innovative solutions that enable the transition to renewable energy sources,' Hashimoto added. The move by MOL comes as the global offshore wind industry experiences rapid growth, driven by ambitious renewable energy targets set by governments across Europe and Asia. According to industry analysts, the global offshore wind market is expected to reach $100 billion by 2030, presenting significant opportunities for shipping companies to support the sector's infrastructure and logistics needs. 'MOL's entry into the European offshore wind vessel market is a testament to the industry's attractiveness and the company's strategic vision to diversify its portfolio and contribute to the clean energy transition,' said a maritime industry analyst at gCaptain.
