Icebreakers Clear Path for Mukran LNG Terminal Reopening

The Mukran LNG terminal in Germany has resumed operations after icebreakers cleared a channel through the frozen Baltic Sea, restoring access to the facility.

The Mukran LNG import terminal off the Baltic coast of Germany has resumed operations this week after icebreaking efforts by the multipurpose vessel Neuwerk restored access to open water, according to a report from gCaptain. The terminal had been disrupted for weeks due to heavy sea ice in the bay off Mukran. However, the Neuwerk's icebreaking work has now cleared a channel, allowing the facility to reopen and resume LNG imports. 'The icebreaking work was critical to restoring operations at this key LNG terminal,' said an industry analyst. 'With Europe still heavily reliant on natural gas imports, keeping these facilities running through the winter months is essential.' The Mukran terminal is one of several floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) that have been rapidly deployed across Europe in recent years to boost LNG import capacity and diversify the continent's energy supply in the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ensuring the reliability of these terminals through challenging winter conditions is a priority for European energy security.
