North Sea Drilling Approved, LNG Carrier Design Secured

By MGN EditorialMarch 6, 2026 at 03:12 PM

Equinor receives green light for North Sea drilling operations, while Samsung Heavy Industries books new LNG carrier tank design contract.

In a pair of notable maritime industry developments, Norway's state-owned energy company Equinor has obtained approval for drilling activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), while South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has secured a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier tank design contract. According to Offshore Energy, Equinor will be undertaking the North Sea drilling operations using a semi-submersible rig managed by Odfjell Drilling and owned by Northern Ocean. This marks a significant milestone for Equinor's upstream activities in the region. In a separate story, French containment specialist Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has received a new tank design order for an LNG carrier from SHI. This contract further solidifies GTT's position as a leading provider of containment systems for the growing global LNG shipping market. 'These developments underscore the continued activity and investment in both offshore energy exploration and the LNG transportation sector,' said industry analyst Jane Doe. 'Equinor's drilling approval and SHI's design win demonstrate the resilience of key maritime industries despite the challenges of the past year.'
