Prysmian Qualifies 525 kV Cables for Higher Power Transfers

Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has completed testing and qualified the use of its 525 kV cables at up to 90°C, enabling higher power transfers for offshore energy projects.

In a significant development for the offshore energy sector, Italian cable giant Prysmian has announced that it has successfully qualified the use of its 525 kV cables at temperatures up to 90°C. This advancement allows for higher power transfers to support the growing demand for electricity from offshore wind, oil & gas, and other maritime energy projects. According to Offshore Energy, Prysmian completed the necessary testing to certify the cables for use at the elevated temperature range. This qualification expands the capabilities of Prysmian's high-voltage cable solutions, which are critical infrastructure for transmitting large amounts of power from offshore installations to onshore grids. 'The qualification of our 525 kV cables for operation at up to 90°C is an important milestone that will enable our customers to benefit from increased power transmission capacity and efficiency,' said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects BU at Prysmian Group. 'This innovation supports the energy transition by facilitating the integration of more renewable energy from offshore wind farms into power grids.' The ability to transmit higher voltages and power levels is a key enabler for the offshore energy sector as projects move further from shore and require more robust electrical systems. Prysmian's qualification of its 525 kV cables at elevated temperatures is expected to be well-received by developers seeking to maximize the efficiency and capacity of their offshore energy infrastructure.
