Rising Airspace Complexity Poses Safety Risks Near Busy Airports

By MGN EditorialFebruary 17, 2026 at 01:12 PM

The Flight Safety Foundation warns that increasing operational complexity and growing demand from traditional and nontraditional operators is putting greater pressure on aviation safety near busy airports.

The Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) has raised concerns about the rising risks in mixed-use airspace near busy airports, according to a new report released by the organization. The report highlights that 'increasing operational complexity and growing demand from traditional and nontraditional operators is putting ever greater pressure on the aviation safety ecosystem.' This includes the growing use of drones, urban air mobility vehicles, and other emerging airspace users operating in close proximity to commercial air traffic. 'The aviation industry is experiencing a period of rapid technological change and innovation, which is creating new safety challenges that we must proactively address,' said Hassan Shahidi, President and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation. 'As airspace becomes more crowded, it is critical that we have robust policies, procedures and technologies in place to ensure the continued safe operation of all aircraft.' The report recommends several actions to mitigate the rising risks, including: - Developing new airspace management frameworks to integrate traditional and nontraditional operators - Investing in advanced surveillance and communication technologies to improve airspace awareness - Establishing clear operational guidelines and training requirements for emerging airspace users - Fostering greater collaboration between aviation regulators, air navigation service providers, and industry stakeholders 'Safety must remain the top priority as the aviation industry continues to evolve,' added Shahidi. 'We need to work together as a community to address these complex challenges and ensure the skies remain safe for everyone.' According to gCaptain, the FSF report comes as the maritime industry also grapples with the integration of new technologies like autonomous ships and drones into crowded waterways. Experts say similar airspace management strategies will be crucial for ensuring safe coexistence between traditional and emerging maritime operations.
