Russia has taken a significant step toward deploying its second domestically constructed Arc7 icebreaking liquefied natural gas carrier, with a naming ceremony for the *Konstantin Posyet* held this week in the presence — via video link — of Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, according to gCaptain. The ceremony marks a milestone in Russia's broader effort to develop an indigenous fleet capable of sustaining Arctic LNG export operations without reliance on Western-built tonnage. The vessel's naming signals it is nearing commercial service, a development that will be closely watched by energy markets and sanctions monitors alike. The *Konstantin Posyet* is the second in a series of Arc7-class LNG carriers built at Russia's Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in Bolshoy Kamen, in the Russian Far East. Arc7 vessels are engineered to navigate ice up to 2.1 metres thick, making them essential for year-round operations along the Northern Sea Route and for serving Novatek's Arctic LNG projects. Novatek, Russia's largest independent natural gas producer, has faced mounting pressure since Western sanctions were imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions have disrupted the company's access to foreign-built carriers and key technology partners, forcing a pivot toward domestic shipbuilding capacity — a strategy the Kremlin has actively supported.
