Seized Russian Oil Tanker Heads to U.S. After Detention in Scotland

A Russian-flagged oil tanker seized in the North Atlantic is now en route to the United States after being held in Scottish waters.

A Russian-flagged oil tanker that was seized by American authorities in the North Atlantic has begun its journey across the Atlantic to the United States, according to BBC Scotland News. The 104,000-deadweight-ton tanker, named Marinera, was seized on January 7th south of Iceland before being escorted to Scotland. American officials took control of the vessel, which is Russian-owned, as part of sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. After being moored in Scottish waters for several weeks, the Marinera has now departed and is headed across the Atlantic. The tanker's ultimate destination in the U.S. is not yet known, but the voyage marks the latest development in the ongoing efforts to enforce sanctions on Russian maritime assets. "This is an important step in holding Russia accountable for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine," said a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice, according to *Hellenic Shipping News*. "We will continue to work with our international partners to disrupt Russia's ability to wage war." The seizure and relocation of the Marinera is part of a broader campaign by Western nations to target Russia's maritime trade and logistics in response to the Ukraine conflict. As the war continues, further actions against Russian-linked vessels can be expected in the coming months.
