In a collaborative effort, South Carolina Ports and local maritime partners are organizing a toy drive to support foster children during the holiday season, aiming to fill a shipping container with donations.
CHARLESTON, SC – In a significant community initiative, South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) has announced the launch of its fourth annual holiday toy drive, aimed at fulfilling the wish lists of South Carolina’s foster children. This effort, which seeks to fill a 40-foot shipping container with unwrapped toys, is supported by local maritime and trucking communities, including the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Locals 1422, 1422-A, and 1771, as well as Coalition 18 and the Maritime Association of South Carolina.
SC Ports President and CEO Micah Mallace emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Helping to ensure prosperity for all South Carolina residents is at the core of what we do. We’re thankful for our maritime and supply chain partners for stepping up again this year to give back to those most in need during the holiday season.” This sentiment reflects a broader commitment within the maritime industry to engage in social responsibility, particularly during the holidays when many families face additional challenges.
The toy drive has successfully collected approximately 2,000 donations each year since its inception, with toys distributed statewide by the South Carolina Department of Social Services. Juan Gordon, President of Coalition 18, highlighted the impact of the trucking community, noting, “The work the trucking community does every day reaches homes and families all over our state.” This collaboration not only supports local families but also reinforces the interconnectedness of the supply chain and community welfare.
The ILA Local 1422 and Local 1422-A have been actively involved in these charitable efforts, with their members expressing a strong commitment to community support. “These efforts are especially important during the holidays, and we call on others in the Charleston area to join us in making a lasting impact in the lives of our state’s children,” stated representatives from the ILA.
Taylor Jackson, President and CEO of the Maritime Association of South Carolina, added, “Working collaboratively is essential to the work our industry does each day. We are proud to support this effort with our partners again this year and give back to those in need this holiday season.” This collaboration among various stakeholders in the maritime sector underscores the industry's role not only in facilitating trade but also in contributing positively to local communities.
Unwrapped toys can be dropped off at SC Ports headquarters, located at 200 Ports Authority Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC. The initiative not only highlights the generosity of the maritime community but also serves as a reminder of the industry's capacity to effect positive change beyond its economic contributions.
As the holiday season approaches, this toy drive exemplifies how maritime and logistics sectors can leverage their networks and resources to support vulnerable populations, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in the supply chain narrative. The success of such initiatives can enhance the reputation of the industry while fostering goodwill among local residents and stakeholders, ultimately benefiting the broader economic landscape of South Carolina.
