Strohm to Deploy Pilot Ultra-Deepwater TCP Flowline off Brazil in 2027
By MGN Editorial•September 22, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Dutch manufacturer Strohm is set to deploy a pioneering thermoplastic composite pipe flowline in ultra-deepwater conditions off Brazil in early 2027, marking a significant milestone for the technology in subsea applications.
## Strohm Advances Ultra-Deepwater TCP Technology with Brazil Pilot Deployment
Dutch thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) specialist Strohm is preparing to deploy a pilot ultra-deepwater flowline off the coast of Brazil in early 2027, in what represents a landmark step forward for the technology in demanding subsea environments.
According to Offshore Energy, the deployment is being carried out as part of a joint industry program (JIP), underscoring the collaborative nature of the initiative and the broad industry interest in validating TCP performance at extreme water depths.
### Why This Matters
Thermoplastic composite pipes have attracted growing attention from the offshore oil and gas sector as a lighter, corrosion-resistant alternative to traditional steel flowlines. TCP's inherent flexibility and resistance to the harsh chemical and pressure conditions found in deepwater and ultra-deepwater environments make it an attractive candidate for subsea tiebacks and production flowlines — applications where installation costs and long-term integrity are critical concerns.
The Brazil deployment will serve as a critical proof-of-concept for the technology at ultra-deepwater depths, a segment of the market where operational challenges are significantly amplified. Brazil's pre-salt offshore basins, operated predominantly by Petrobras, represent some of the world's most technically demanding deepwater environments, making them an ideal — if challenging — proving ground.
### Joint Industry Collaboration
The joint industry program structure signals that multiple operators and stakeholders have a vested interest in the outcome of this pilot. JIPs are a common mechanism in the offshore sector for sharing the cost and risk of technology qualification, particularly for innovations that could deliver industry-wide benefits if successfully proven.
Strohm, headquartered in the Netherlands, has been a leading proponent of TCP technology for subsea applications and has previously deployed the pipe system in shallower water projects. The 2027 Brazil pilot would extend the qualified operating envelope of the technology significantly.
### Outlook
A successful ultra-deepwater deployment could open substantial new market opportunities for TCP flowlines, particularly as operators seek cost-effective and durable solutions for increasingly remote and deep subsea tiebacks. The offshore industry will be watching the Brazil pilot closely as a potential inflection point for wider TCP adoption.
Further technical and operational details of the JIP are expected to be disclosed as the project progresses toward its early 2027 deployment window.
