The global ternary cathode NCM material market is projected to reach $28.65 billion by 2031, driven by surging demand for electric vehicle batteries.

The global market for ternary cathode NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) material is poised for rapid growth in the coming years, according to a new report from Valuates Reports. The report projects the NCM material market will reach a revised size of $28.65 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 16.5% from 2024. This growth is primarily driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the corresponding demand for high-performance battery materials. 'The rising demand for electric vehicles globally is a key factor driving the growth of the ternary cathode NCM material market,' the report states. 'NCM materials are widely used in lithium-ion batteries for EVs due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and improved safety characteristics.' In 2024, the global NCM material market was valued at $9.156 billion, the report found. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for the largest share of this market, followed by North America and Europe. Leading industry figures have also highlighted the importance of advanced battery materials like NCM in enabling the transition to sustainable energy. In a recent speech, Dr. Robin Zeng, chairman and CEO of battery giant CATL, discussed how 'cobalt-free' battery technologies are opening a new era of sustainable energy. 'Bezulíkové [cobalt-free] technologies are ushering in a new era of sustainable energy,' Zeng said at the World Summit of Nobel Prize Laureates and World Government Summit in Dubai. 'These innovative materials and cell designs are critical to meeting the growing global demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.' As automakers and energy companies race to scale up EV production and renewable power, the demand for high-performance battery materials like ternary cathode NCM is expected to surge in the years ahead.
