Top Ships Expands MR Tanker Orderbook with Four Additional GSI Newbuildings
By MGN Editorial•October 8, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Greek owner Top Ships has placed orders for four more medium range tankers at Guangzhou Shipyard International, bringing its total MR newbuilding pipeline to 14 vessels.
Top Ships, the New York-listed Greek tanker owner led by Evangelos Pistiolis, is significantly expanding its medium range (MR) tanker fleet with the addition of four further newbuilding contracts at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), according to Splash247.
The latest order lifts the company's MR newbuilding pipeline at the Chinese yard to 14 vessels, underscoring a sustained and aggressive growth strategy in the product tanker segment. Top Ships has agreed to acquire four related-party special purpose companies holding the newbuilding contracts, a structure the owner has employed in previous fleet expansion moves.
The decision to double down at GSI reflects growing owner confidence in Chinese shipyard capacity for MR tanker construction, a segment that has attracted considerable ordering activity in recent years as product tanker demand remains robust. MR tankers — typically vessels in the 45,000 to 55,000 deadweight tonne range — are workhorses of the refined petroleum products trade, moving cargoes such as gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel across regional and intercontinental routes.
Top Ships has been one of the more active Greek owners in the newbuilding market, with Pistiolis pursuing an expansion strategy that has drawn both attention and scrutiny given the related-party transaction structures frequently involved. The company's New York Stock Exchange listing gives it access to capital markets to fund fleet growth, though such structures are routinely examined by investors and analysts for governance implications.
The broader product tanker market has provided a supportive backdrop for ordering decisions of this scale. Tonne-mile demand for refined products has been reshaped by the ongoing redirection of trade flows following sanctions on Russian oil exports, with European buyers sourcing product from longer-haul origins in the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas — a dynamic that has underpinned MR tanker earnings in recent years.
With 14 MR newbuildings now on order at GSI, Top Ships is positioning itself for a substantial fleet renewal and expansion cycle as vessels are delivered over the coming years. The timing and delivery schedule of the four additional units has not yet been disclosed publicly.
