TotalEnergies and Holcim Inaugurate 31 MW Floating Solar Plant in Belgium

French energy giant TotalEnergies and construction firm Holcim have launched a new 31 MW floating solar power plant in Belgium.

In a significant development for the maritime energy sector, French energy major TotalEnergies and Swiss construction company Holcim have inaugurated a 31 megawatt (MW) floating solar power plant in Belgium. The new facility, located on a former sand quarry in the municipality of Linne, is one of the largest floating solar projects in Europe. According to an announcement from TotalEnergies, the floating solar plant covers an area of 45 hectares and is expected to produce 28 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually - enough to power over 9,000 households. The project was developed as a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Holcim, with TotalEnergies serving as the operator. "This floating solar plant is an important step in TotalEnergies' development of renewable energy solutions," said Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President Renewables at TotalEnergies. "It demonstrates our ability to innovate and implement large-scale projects that contribute to the energy transition." The use of floating solar technology allows renewable energy generation on bodies of water, reducing the need for land-based installations. This can be particularly beneficial in coastal and island regions with limited available land. Floating solar also helps to reduce evaporation from water reservoirs, an increasingly important consideration as climate change impacts water resources. "This project is an excellent example of how we can combine sustainable construction with renewable energy generation," said Miljan Gutovic, Region Head EMEA at Holcim. "By partnering with TotalEnergies, we are able to leverage our expertise in materials and construction to develop innovative solutions that support the energy transition." The inauguration of the Linne floating solar plant comes as the maritime industry continues to explore new ways to incorporate renewable energy sources. As vessels, ports, and other maritime infrastructure seek to reduce their carbon footprints, floating solar represents a promising technology that can be deployed on bodies of water. This project in Belgium demonstrates the scalability and commercial viability of such solutions.
