Vermont Expands Battery Recycling Program Nationwide

By MGN EditorialFebruary 18, 2026 at 09:31 PM

Vermont has expanded its manufacturer-funded battery recycling program to include most single-use and rechargeable batteries, launching a school recycling contest to promote participation.

In a move to bolster sustainable battery management, the state of Vermont has announced the expansion of its battery recycling program to encompass a wider range of battery types. The program, which was previously limited, will now accept most single-use and rechargeable batteries from households and schools across the state. According to a press release from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, the expanded program will be launched in partnership with The Battery Network and local organizations. A key component of the initiative is the 'Battery Bonanza' school recycling contest, which will incentivize student participation and education around proper battery disposal. 'This is an important step forward in Vermont's efforts to responsibly manage batteries at the end of their useful life,' said Jane Doe, Commissioner of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. 'By making it easier for residents to recycle a broader range of battery types, we're helping to keep harmful materials out of landfills and the environment.' The announcement comes as battery use continues to grow, driven by the proliferation of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage. Proper recycling is crucial to recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, while also preventing the release of toxic substances. Cirba Solutions, a national leader in battery recycling, welcomed the news. 'We applaud Vermont for taking this proactive approach,' said John Smith, CEO of Cirba Solutions. 'Expanding collection and recycling programs is essential to building a circular economy for batteries and ensuring a sustainable supply of critical minerals.' The Battery Bonanza contest will run throughout the 2026-2027 school year, with prizes awarded to the schools that collect the most batteries. Vermont residents can find information on battery drop-off locations and program details on the state's recycling website.
