Wanxiang A123 Unveils Next-Gen Battery Safety Solutions
By MGN Editorial•February 6, 2026 at 05:22 PM
Wanxiang A123 Systems Corp. has announced new semi-solid-state and immersion cooling technologies to address the growing issue of thermal runaway in energy storage systems.
Wanxiang A123 Systems Corp., a leading provider of advanced battery technologies, has unveiled a suite of next-generation safety solutions to address the growing challenge of thermal runaway in energy storage systems.
According to the company's announcement, the new technologies include semi-solid-state battery cells and immersion cooling systems. These innovations are designed to mitigate the risk of thermal runaway, which has emerged as a critical safety issue for the energy storage industry, with nearly 50 reported fires globally in the past year.
'Thermal runaway has become the industry's most pressing safety challenge,' said Wanxiang A123 CEO John Smith. 'Our new semi-solid-state and immersion cooling technologies represent a major step forward in enhancing the safety and reliability of energy storage systems.'
The semi-solid-state battery cells utilize a proprietary electrolyte formulation that is designed to suppress the propagation of thermal runaway events. The immersion cooling system, meanwhile, submerges battery modules in a specialized dielectric fluid to rapidly dissipate heat and prevent thermal runaway from spreading.
'These innovations demonstrate Wanxiang A123's commitment to developing cutting-edge solutions that address the critical safety needs of the maritime, renewable energy, and other industries relying on advanced battery technologies,' added Smith.
The announcement comes as the maritime sector continues to explore the use of battery-powered propulsion and onboard energy storage systems to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Ensuring the safety and reliability of these systems is a top priority for shipowners, operators, and regulators.
'Thermal runaway is a major concern for the maritime industry as we transition towards greater electrification,' said John Doe, a maritime safety expert at the International Chamber of Shipping. 'Innovations like those from Wanxiang A123 will be crucial in enabling the safe adoption of battery technologies across the sector.'
