Ericsson, Leonardo, and the Italian Navy successfully demonstrated long-range 5G standalone data communication and on-board connectivity for naval vessels in real-world operational conditions.

In a significant milestone for maritime technology, Ericsson, Leonardo, and the Italian Navy have successfully trialed 5G standalone (5G SA) capabilities at sea, showcasing the potential for enhanced connectivity and digital transformation in the naval sector. According to a press release from Ericsson, the live trials were conducted over a prolonged period, testing 5G SA data communication, on-board connectivity, and naval vessel systems in both daytime and nighttime operational conditions. The demonstration highlighted the ability to maintain long-range 5G connectivity, a critical requirement for modern naval operations. 'This successful trial of 5G standalone technology at sea represents an important step forward in enhancing the capabilities of naval forces,' said Emanuele Massimo Tagliaferri, Vice President and Head of Ericsson Italy. 'By working closely with Leonardo and the Italian Navy, we have shown the real-world potential of 5G to enable more advanced, data-driven naval operations.' The trial is part of a broader effort by the Italian Navy to explore the integration of 5G and other emerging technologies to improve communication, situational awareness, and operational efficiency. 'Connectivity is a key enabler for the digital transformation of naval platforms and systems,' said Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo. 'This successful trial demonstrates our commitment to working with partners like Ericsson to deliver innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of naval forces.' As the maritime industry continues to embrace digital technologies, successful demonstrations like this one from Ericsson, Leonardo, and the Italian Navy will help pave the way for more widespread adoption of 5G and other advanced communications systems across the sector.
